Maxun
No-code web data platform that records browser actions or uses AI to turn websites into structured data and APIs.
Quick answer
Maxun is a no-code web data platform that records browser actions or uses AI to turn websites into structured data and APIs, listed under Web scraping for AI. A typical small-business use: track competitor prices or product listings on a schedule. The project publishes no official RAM figure, so we do not estimate a monthly server cost. License: AGPL-3.0, which allows internal business use.

What is Maxun?
Maxun turns websites into structured data. You record browser actions into reusable extraction robots, or describe the data in plain language and let AI Mode extract it. It also scrapes pages to Markdown, HTML or screenshots, crawls whole sites, runs web searches, monitors pages for changes and parses documents. Robots can be scheduled and used through a REST API, SDK, CLI or MCP server.
Where it fits in a 10–200 person business
- Track competitor prices or product listings on a schedule
- Collect leads from directories into a spreadsheet without writing scrapers
- Feed website content to an AI assistant as clean Markdown
These use cases are our editorial suggestions, not claims made by the project.
Can a business use Maxun? (license)
| License | AGPL-3.0 |
|---|---|
| Type | Network copyleft (AGPL): Like GPL, and also applies when users access a modified version over a network. |
| Internal business use | Allowed under the license text |
| What to watch | Free to use internally, including commercially. If you modify it and let users outside your organisation use it over a network, you must publish your changes under AGPL-3.0. |
This is a plain-English summary of the license text, not legal advice. Third-party models you run with it have their own licenses.
Data & compliance: does Maxun phone home?
| Telemetry (usage data sent to the vendor) | On by default Anonymous usage telemetry; the example environment file ships MAXUN_TELEMETRY=true and the docs ask users to keep it enabled. How to turn it off: Set MAXUN_TELEMETRY=false. |
|---|---|
| Other calls home by default (updates, marketplaces, default cloud services) | Not documented |
| Single sign-on (OIDC / SAML / LDAP) | Not documented |
| Audit log | Not documented |
| Role-based access control (RBAC) | No Teams with Admin, Member and Viewer roles are a Maxun Cloud feature; the self-hosted comparison lists Teams and collaboration as not included. Source: docs.maxun.dev/cloud-vs-oss |
| Data residency / GDPR notes from the project | Not documented |
Checked against the project's own docs and repository on . "Not documented" means we could not find the answer in official sources; it does not mean the feature is missing or that no data is sent. Third-party services you connect (model APIs, vector databases, search engines) have their own data policies. Compare all apps.
What hardware does Maxun need?
The project does not publish a minimum CPU/RAM figure, so we leave the official value blank rather than guess.
No server requirements are published. The official docker-compose.yml caps the backend container at 6 GB of memory (mem_limit) and gives it 2 GB of shared memory for the headless browser; these are compose settings, not stated minimums.

How much does it cost to host Maxun per month?
The project publishes no RAM figure we could verify, so we do not estimate a cost.
How to deploy Maxun
Method: Docker Compose
mkdir maxun && cd maxun
# create .env from ENVEXAMPLE and set JWT_SECRET, SESSION_SECRET, ENCRYPTION_KEY:
openssl rand -base64 48 # JWT_SECRET
openssl rand -base64 48 # SESSION_SECRET
openssl rand -hex 32 # ENCRYPTION_KEY
curl -O https://raw.githubusercontent.com/getmaxun/maxun/develop/docker-compose.yml
docker-compose up -d From the official instructions: docs.maxun.dev/installation/docker. Always check the source for the current version before you run it.
Known gotchas when self-hosting Maxun
- Anonymous usage telemetry (PostHog) is enabled in the example .env; set MAXUN_TELEMETRY=false to turn it off. source
- The quick-start compose file publishes PostgreSQL and MinIO ports on the host; the production guide keeps Maxun on localhost behind an NGINX reverse proxy with HTTPS. source
- Deep Extraction, automatic proxy rotation, captcha bypass, managed anti-bot infrastructure and Teams are Maxun Cloud only; self-hosters bring their own proxies. source
Alternatives in Web scraping for AI
- Firecrawl API that turns websites into clean Markdown or structured data for LLMs. Compare Firecrawl vs Maxun
- Crawl4AI Open-source crawler and scraper that turns web pages into LLM-ready Markdown, with a self-hosted API server. Compare Crawl4AI vs Maxun
Maxun FAQ
How much RAM does Maxun need?
Maxun does not publish an official RAM figure, so we do not state one. No server requirements are published. The official docker-compose.yml caps the backend container at 6 GB of memory (mem_limit) and gives it 2 GB of shared memory for the headless browser; these are compose settings, not stated minimums.
How much does it cost to self-host Maxun?
The software is free to download. The project publishes no official RAM figure, so we do not estimate a monthly server cost.
Is Maxun free for commercial use?
Maxun is licensed under AGPL-3.0 (Network copyleft (AGPL)). Internal business use is allowed under the license text. Free to use internally, including commercially. If you modify it and let users outside your organisation use it over a network, you must publish your changes under AGPL-3.0. This is a summary, not legal advice.
What are common problems when self-hosting Maxun?
Anonymous usage telemetry (PostHog) is enabled in the example .env; set MAXUN_TELEMETRY=false to turn it off. The quick-start compose file publishes PostgreSQL and MinIO ports on the host; the production guide keeps Maxun on localhost behind an NGINX reverse proxy with HTTPS. Deep Extraction, automatic proxy rotation, captcha bypass, managed anti-bot infrastructure and Teams are Maxun Cloud only; self-hosters bring their own proxies.
Is Maxun still maintained?
Yes, it is actively developed. Last commit: Oct 28, 2026. Latest release: v0.1.0 (Oct 25, 2026). Checked Nov 4, 2026.
How do I install Maxun?
The official method is Docker Compose. The exact commands are in the "How to deploy" section above and in the official instructions: https://docs.maxun.dev/installation/docker
What are self-hosted alternatives to Maxun?
Other apps in Web scraping for AI: Firecrawl, Crawl4AI.
