Scriberr

Self-hosted web app that transcribes audio offline, with speaker labels and AI summaries.

Quick answer

Scriberr is a self-hosted web app that transcribes audio offline, with speaker labels and AI summaries, listed under Speech & translation. A typical small-business use: transcribe meetings, interviews or voice memos on your own server instead of a paid cloud note-taker. The project publishes no official RAM figure, so we do not estimate a monthly server cost. License: MIT, which allows internal business use.

What is Scriberr?

Scriberr is a self-hosted transcription web app. It runs Whisper, NVIDIA Parakeet or Canary models locally, detects speakers, and lets you summarize or chat with a transcript through Ollama or an OpenAI-compatible API. It has a built-in recorder, notes and highlights, a folder watcher for new files, APIs for automation, and installs as a PWA on desktop or mobile.

Where it fits in a 10–200 person business

  • Transcribe meetings, interviews or voice memos on your own server instead of a paid cloud note-taker
  • Drop recordings into a watched folder and have them transcribed and summarized automatically
  • Feed transcripts into n8n or other tools through the API

These use cases are our editorial suggestions, not claims made by the project.

Can a business use Scriberr? (license)

LicenseMIT
TypePermissive: MIT / Apache-2.0: use, modify and sell with few obligations.
Internal business useAllowed under the license text
What to watchPermissive. Internal and commercial use allowed; keep the license notice.

This is a plain-English summary of the license text, not legal advice. Third-party models you run with it have their own licenses.

Data & compliance: does Scriberr phone home?

Telemetry (usage data sent to the vendor) Not documented
Other calls home by default (updates, marketplaces, default cloud services) Not documented
Single sign-on (OIDC / SAML / LDAP) Not documented
Audit log Not documented
Role-based access control (RBAC) Not documented
Data residency / GDPR notes from the project Documented

The project says transcription runs locally so no audio is sent to a third-party cloud provider; summaries and chat go to the Ollama or OpenAI-compatible provider you configure.

Checked against the project's own docs and repository on . "Not documented" means we could not find the answer in official sources; it does not mean the feature is missing or that no data is sent. Third-party services you connect (model APIs, vector databases, search engines) have their own data policies. Compare all apps.

What hardware does Scriberr need?

The project does not publish a minimum CPU/RAM figure, so we leave the official value blank rather than guess.

GPU: Optional. The standard image runs on machines without an NVIDIA GPU; CUDA images cover GTX 10 to RTX 40 series, and RTX 50 (Blackwell) cards need the separate scriberr-cuda-blackwell image.

No official RAM or disk figures are published.

How much does it cost to host Scriberr per month?

The project publishes no RAM figure we could verify, so we do not estimate a cost.

How to deploy Scriberr

Method: Docker Compose

# docker-compose.yml

Known gotchas when self-hosting Scriberr

  • Secure cookies are on in production. Served over plain HTTP, audio will not load ("Unable to load audio stream") unless you set SECURE_COOKIES=false; the recommended fix is HTTPS behind a reverse proxy. source
  • Set PUID/PGID to your host user, or the SQLite database fails with an "out of memory (14)" permissions error. source
  • Upgrading from v1.1.0 needs a volume change: app data goes to /app/data and a new, empty /app/whisperx-env; the old whisperx-env folder must be deleted. source
  • The README carries a project-status note: development was paused for a while and the maintainer says it is resuming. The latest tagged release is v1.2.0. source

Alternatives in Speech & translation

  • whisper.cpp Fast C/C++ port of OpenAI Whisper speech recognition with a small HTTP transcription server.
  • PDFMathTranslate PDF translator that keeps the original layout, formulas, charts and tables.
  • Meetily Desktop meeting recorder that transcribes and summarizes meetings locally.
  • LibreTranslate Self-hosted machine translation API with no dependency on Google or DeepL.
  • Speaches OpenAI-compatible speech-to-text and text-to-speech server (faster-whisper, Kokoro, Piper).
  • Whisper ASR Webservice Whisper speech-to-text as a REST API in one Docker container.
