Typesense
In-memory search engine with typo-tolerant keyword, vector, semantic and hybrid search.
Quick answer
Typesense is an in-memory search engine with typo-tolerant keyword, vector, semantic and hybrid search, listed under Data labeling & vector databases. A typical small-business use: add instant, typo-tolerant search to a website, store catalogue or help center. Official hardware: minimum 2 vCPU. The project publishes no official RAM figure, so we do not estimate a monthly server cost. License: GPL-3.0, which allows internal business use.

What is Typesense?
Typesense is a C++ search engine that keeps its index in memory for low-latency, typo-tolerant search with filters, facets, geo search and JOINs. It also stores vectors for vector search and can generate embeddings itself with built-in models (S-BERT, E5 and others) or through OpenAI and other remote services, so it works for semantic and hybrid search and as the retrieval layer of a RAG app. It ships as a single binary, DEB/RPM packages and an official Docker image, and can run as a cluster.
Where it fits in a 10–200 person business
- Add instant, typo-tolerant search to a website, store catalogue or help center
- Combine keyword and semantic search over internal documents or products
- Replace a hosted search service (Algolia-style) with a self-hosted engine
These use cases are our editorial suggestions, not claims made by the project.
Can a business use Typesense? (license)
| License | GPL-3.0 |
|---|---|
| Type | Copyleft (GPL): Free to use; distributing modified versions requires sharing source. |
| Internal business use | Allowed under the license text |
| What to watch | Free for internal and commercial use. If you distribute a modified version you must release it under GPL-3.0; running it for your own team or behind your own app is not distribution. |
This is a plain-English summary of the license text, not legal advice. Third-party models you run with it have their own licenses.
Data & compliance: does Typesense phone home?
| Telemetry (usage data sent to the vendor) | Not documented |
|---|---|
| Other calls home by default (updates, marketplaces, default cloud services) | Not documented |
| Single sign-on (OIDC / SAML / LDAP) | Not documented The docs describe Single Sign-On and dashboard roles only for Typesense Cloud. |
| Audit log | Not documented |
| Role-based access control (RBAC) | Not documented |
| Data residency / GDPR notes from the project | Not documented |
Checked against the project's own docs and repository on . "Not documented" means we could not find the answer in official sources; it does not mean the feature is missing or that no data is sent. Third-party services you connect (model APIs, vector databases, search engines) have their own data policies. Compare all apps.
What hardware does Typesense need?
| Minimum | 2 vCPU |
|---|---|
| Recommended | Not published |
| GPU | Optional. A GPU helps generate embeddings for vector search and voice query; Typesense uses any available NVIDIA GPU once CUDA and its GPU package are installed. |
"Typesense requires at least 2 vCPUs." RAM depends entirely on your data: the whole index is held in memory, typically 2–3x the size of the fields you search on; vectors take 7 bytes per dimension per record, and built-in embedding models need another 2–6 GB. No fixed RAM or disk minimum is published.
How much does it cost to host Typesense per month?
The project publishes no RAM figure we could verify, so we do not estimate a cost.
How to deploy Typesense
Method: Docker
export TYPESENSE_API_KEY=xyz
mkdir "$(pwd)"/typesense-data
docker run -p 8108:8108 \
-v"$(pwd)"/typesense-data:/data typesense/typesense:30.2 \
--data-dir /data \
--api-key=$TYPESENSE_API_KEY \
--enable-cors
# replace xyz with a long random admin key before exposing the server From the official instructions: typesense.org/docs/guide/install-typesense.html. Always check the source for the current version before you run it.
Known gotchas when self-hosting Typesense
- The Docker, Compose, Homebrew and binary examples all use the admin API key xyz. Set your own random key, and give apps scoped search-only keys rather than the admin key. source
- The entire search index lives in RAM (about 2–3x the size of the searched fields), so size the server to your data; unindexed display-only fields stay on disk. source
- Semantic or hybrid search with a built-in model needs 2–6 GB of extra RAM for the model; using a remote embedding service such as OpenAI avoids that but sends your text to that service. source
- v26.0 and later DEB packages and Linux binaries need Ubuntu 20 or later (or a recent Linux kernel). source
Alternatives in Data labeling & vector databases
- LlamaFactory Fine-tune 100+ open LLMs and VLMs from a web UI or CLI, without writing training code.
- Meilisearch Fast search engine with full-text, semantic and hybrid (AI) search, shipped as a single binary.
- Milvus Scalable open-source vector database for semantic search and RAG at large data volumes.
- Qdrant Fast vector database for semantic search and RAG back-ends.
- Chroma Open-source embedding database for vector, full-text and metadata search in RAG apps.
- Label Studio Data labeling tool for text, images, audio and video, used to build and evaluate AI models.
- pgvector Open-source PostgreSQL extension for vector similarity search, next to your relational data.
- Weaviate Open-source vector database with hybrid search, RAG and multi-tenancy built in.
Typesense FAQ
How much RAM does Typesense need?
Typesense does not publish an official RAM figure, so we do not state one. "Typesense requires at least 2 vCPUs." Does Typesense need a GPU?
Optional. A GPU helps generate embeddings for vector search and voice query; Typesense uses any available NVIDIA GPU once CUDA and its GPU package are installed.
How much does it cost to self-host Typesense?
The software is free to download. The project publishes no official RAM figure, so we do not estimate a monthly server cost.
Is Typesense free for commercial use?
Typesense is licensed under GPL-3.0 (Copyleft (GPL)). Internal business use is allowed under the license text. Free for internal and commercial use. If you distribute a modified version you must release it under GPL-3.0; running it for your own team or behind your own app is not distribution. This is a summary, not legal advice.
What are common problems when self-hosting Typesense?
The Docker, Compose, Homebrew and binary examples all use the admin API key xyz. Set your own random key, and give apps scoped search-only keys rather than the admin key. Is Typesense still maintained?
Yes, it is actively developed. Last commit: Oct 30, 2026. Latest release: v30.2 (Apr 19, 2026). Checked Nov 2, 2026.
How do I install Typesense?
The official method is Docker. The exact commands are in the "How to deploy" section above and in the official instructions: https://typesense.org/docs/guide/install-typesense.html
What are self-hosted alternatives to Typesense?
Other apps in Data labeling & vector databases: LlamaFactory, Meilisearch, Milvus, Qdrant, Chroma, Label Studio, pgvector, Weaviate.
