What is Anarlog?

Anarlog (formerly Hyprnote) is an open-source, local-first AI notepad for meetings and an alternative to Granola. It records microphone and system audio on your computer, so no bot joins the call, then transcribes and summarizes with on-device models, your own provider keys or the optional Anarlog Cloud. Notes, transcripts and settings are stored locally on the machine. Desktop builds exist for macOS, Windows and Linux.

Where it fits in a 10–200 person business

  • Meeting notes for sales, HR or client calls without a recording bot in the participant list
  • Fully local transcription and summaries on Apple Silicon Macs for confidential meetings
  • Personal meeting notes for consultants or managers who prefer not to use a cloud notetaker

These use cases are our editorial suggestions, not claims made by the project.

Can a business use Anarlog? (license)

LicenseMIT (community app); commercial license for enterprise/
TypePermissive: MIT / Apache-2.0: use, modify and sell with few obligations.
Internal business useAllowed under the license text
What to watchPermissive. The community desktop, web, CLI and server code is MIT: internal and commercial use allowed; keep the license notice. Code under enterprise/ is source-visible but commercially licensed and needs a written agreement with Fastrepl.

This is a plain-English summary of the license text, not legal advice. Third-party models you run with it have their own licenses.

Data & compliance: does Anarlog phone home?

Telemetry (usage data sent to the vendor) Not documented

The desktop app has a "Share usage data (PostHog)" switch for product analytics and session replay, plus a separate switch for sanitized crash and error reports. The docs explain how to turn them off but do not state the default.

How to turn it off: Settings, Privacy, disable "Share usage data (PostHog)" and "Error".

Other calls home by default (updates, marketplaces, default cloud services) Yes, by default

Chat's web search always sends the search query to a hosted research endpoint, even when transcription and summaries are local.

How to turn it off: Do not use web search in Chat.

Notes, transcripts, settings, kept recordings and local models are stored on the computer; content leaves only for hosted providers, encrypted Cloud Sync, sharing or the opt-in Cloud API you enable.

Checked against the project's own docs and repository on . "Not documented" means we could not find the answer in official sources; it does not mean the feature is missing or that no data is sent. Third-party services you connect (model APIs, vector databases, search engines) have their own data policies. Compare all apps.

What hardware does Anarlog need?

The project does not publish a minimum CPU/RAM figure, so we leave the official value blank rather than guess.

GPU: On-device transcription (Soniqo, Apple Speech, on-device whisper.cpp files) requires an Apple Silicon Mac; on Windows and Linux choose Anarlog Cloud or another transcription provider.

No RAM or disk figures are published. macOS builds require macOS 15 or later; Windows and Linux builds are labelled beta.

How much does it cost to host Anarlog per month?

Runs on each user's own computer, so there is no server to rent.

Known gotchas when self-hosting Anarlog

  • Local transcription is Apple Silicon only. On Windows, Linux and Intel Macs the audio goes to Anarlog Cloud or the transcription provider you configure. source
  • Choosing a local model for transcription does not make summaries local, and vice versa: set both Settings, Transcription and Settings, Intelligence to local providers. Chat's web search always sends the query to a hosted research endpoint. source
  • Audio retention is a setting; once the chosen period passes the recording is deleted for good and only the note and transcript remain. source
  • Team workspaces, sharing and roles are part of the paid Pro plan; SSO, SCIM and organization policies are Enterprise, and enterprise/ code is not MIT. source

Alternatives in Speech & translation

  • whisper.cpp Fast C/C++ port of OpenAI Whisper speech recognition with a small HTTP transcription server.
  • PDFMathTranslate PDF translator that keeps the original layout, formulas, charts and tables.
  • Meetily Desktop meeting recorder that transcribes and summarizes meetings locally.
  • LibreTranslate Self-hosted machine translation API with no dependency on Google or DeepL.
  • Speaches OpenAI-compatible speech-to-text and text-to-speech server (faster-whisper, Kokoro, Piper).
  • Whisper ASR Webservice Whisper speech-to-text as a REST API in one Docker container.
  • Scriberr Self-hosted web app that transcribes audio offline, with speaker labels and AI summaries.
