Mem0
Long-term memory layer for AI assistants and agents, with a self-hosted REST server and dashboard.
Quick answer
Mem0 is a long-term memory layer for AI assistants and agents, with a self-hosted REST server and dashboard, listed under AI app & agent builders. A typical small-business use: give a customer-support or sales assistant memory of each customer across conversations. The project publishes no official RAM figure, so we do not estimate a monthly server cost. License: Apache-2.0, which allows internal business use.

What is Mem0?
Mem0 extracts facts from conversations, stores them in a vector store and retrieves the relevant ones on later turns, so a chatbot or agent remembers users, preferences and past decisions across sessions. It ships as Python and TypeScript libraries plus a self-hosted FastAPI server with a dashboard for memories, entities, API keys and a request log. The bundled stack uses PostgreSQL with pgvector and an LLM and embedder from the provider you configure (OpenAI by default).
Where it fits in a 10–200 person business
- Give a customer-support or sales assistant memory of each customer across conversations
- Add per-user memory to an internal agent through a REST API instead of a hosted memory service
- Keep agent memories on your own PostgreSQL for privacy or data-location reasons
These use cases are our editorial suggestions, not claims made by the project.

Data & compliance: does Mem0 phone home?
| Telemetry (usage data sent to the vendor) | On by default Enabled by default. The server sends at most two events per install (first admin created, onboarding completed) to Mem0's anonymous PostHog project, with email domain, server version and install UUID; the onboarding event also carries the use case typed in the setup wizard. How to turn it off: Set MEM0_TELEMETRY=false. |
|---|---|
| Other calls home by default (updates, marketplaces, default cloud services) | Not documented |
| Single sign-on (OIDC / SAML / LDAP) | Not documented |
| Audit log | Yes, free The dashboard's Requests view is a live audit log of API calls (method, path, status, latency). |
| Role-based access control (RBAC) | Not documented |
| Data residency / GDPR notes from the project | Not documented |
Checked against the project's own docs and repository on . "Not documented" means we could not find the answer in official sources; it does not mean the feature is missing or that no data is sent. Third-party services you connect (model APIs, vector databases, search engines) have their own data policies. Compare all apps.
What hardware does Mem0 need?
The project does not publish a minimum CPU/RAM figure, so we leave the official value blank rather than guess.
Mem0 does not publish a minimum host size for the self-hosted server. The stack runs the API, a Next.js dashboard and PostgreSQL with pgvector; LLM and embedding calls go to the provider you configure.
How much does it cost to host Mem0 per month?
The project publishes no RAM figure we could verify, so we do not estimate a cost.
How to deploy Mem0
Method: Docker Compose (build from source)
git clone https://github.com/mem0ai/mem0.git
cd mem0/server
cp .env.example .env
# edit .env: set at least POSTGRES_PASSWORD and OPENAI_API_KEY
make bootstrap
# prints the admin login and first API key once; dashboard http://localhost:3000, API http://localhost:8888 From the official instructions: github.com/mem0ai/mem0/blob/main/server/README.md. Always check the source for the current version before you run it.
Known gotchas when self-hosting Mem0
- make bootstrap prints the admin password and first API key only once, and the API key cannot be recovered afterwards. Save them before closing the terminal. source
- The official docs label the bundled Docker Compose setup as development; enable API-key auth and HTTPS before exposing the server beyond your internal network. AUTH_DISABLED=true is for local development only. source
- The request_logs table is append-only and grows with traffic. Schedule make prune-logs (30 days by default) with cron or a systemd timer in production. source
- The self-hosted server does not use the /v1/ paths of the hosted Mem0 Platform API, so platform API examples do not apply as-is. source
